Underclassmen lead Central men’s soccer team in win

DUBUQUE- After earning a draw in their first conference match, the Central College men’s soccer team rebounded well getting a 2-1 win on the road against the University of Dubuque.

“We are really pleased with the result today,” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “Our guys were committed until the end of the match. After a first half which played more to our style, we knew they wouldn’t let us play like that in the second half. It was a great team effort, and we will take the points and move onto the next game.”

The Dutch (4-4-2, 1-0-1 American Rivers) opened the scoring in the 20th minute when midfielder Josh Wilson (sophomore, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS) put a bouncing ball into the net. It was Wilson’s first goal of the season.

“It was great to see Wilson get off the mark with a goal,” said Laidlaw.

Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy (senior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS) saved all four of the shots he faced, the Spartans (4-6-1, 1-1 A-R-C) scored when he was out with an injury. Murphy returned to start the second half.

Central got a great run from Austin Bone (freshman, Pella) in the 38th minute when he found Lelong Miyeng (sophomore, Bondurant, Des Moines North HS) who found the back of the net. This was Miyeng’s first career goal and Bone’s first assist of his season.

“We also knew we had to be efficient with our chances,” Laidlaw said. “I was really pleased with the way Lelong and Bone crafted our second goal.

The squad returns to the field when it hits the road and takes on Buena Vista Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
