Trio Recognized by Conference, Coertze Newcomer of the Year
Oskaloosa–William Penn had three of the league’s top golfers as the 2012-2013 all-Midwest Collegiate Conference women’s golf teams were announced today.
Maggie Yang (So., Chino, Calif., Biology) and Demi Coertze (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Undecided) were both members of the five-person first team, while Courtney Kronmuller (Sr., Fountain Valley, Calif., Digital Communications) was tabbed for the seven-member honorable-mention squad.
Coertze was also named MCC Newcomer of the Year, while Kenzie Rottinghaus of Grand View won the MCC Player of the Year honor. GVU’s Chris Winkel was tabbed as Coach of the Year by his peers.
William Penn, which broke a school record with a ranking of #23 during the year, was either first or second in 11 of 12 events this season.
Yang, now a two-time first-teamer, paced the Statesmen with an 81.2 stroke average. The sophomore claimed three tournament medalist honors (six other top fives) and picked up three MCC Player of the Week awards. She posted seven rounds in the 70s, including three times at 78.
“Maggie put together another solid season for our team,” Head Coach Nik Rule said. “She is easily one of the top-two players in our conference and showed that throughout the season. I am excited about Maggie’s progress and believe the best is yet to come from her. She is working at a higher level than ever before in her collegiate career.”
Coertze was easily the best freshman in the conference, being the only first-year player on the MCC’s top squad. She posted an 82.9 average with one tournament win and six other top-five finishes. The freshman went into the 70s on six occasions, including a low of 78 three times.
“It is hard to believe Demi is just a freshman,” Rule said. “I think her statistics throughout the year show that she has a mature game. Demi especially had a very solid fall season which helped pave the way for us climbing up the national rankings. She struggled a bit early on, but had a breakthrough toward the end from a mental standpoint that will benefit her far into the future.”
Kronmuller, now a two-time honorable mention, had by far her best campaign in her final year with an 83.6 clip. The senior won once en route to an MCC POW laurel and managed five other top-five placings. She broke 80 four times, highlighted by a team season-best 76.
“Courtney was without a doubt one of the best players in the conference,” Rule said. “She is one of those players whose consistency is underrated, but who is essential to have for a team to succeed. She has had a great career and we have big shoes to fill with her graduating.”
