2000: A snow storm on December 10-11 produced moderate to heavy accumulations across most of Iowa, beginning in earnest what would become one of the snowiest winters in state history. In the December 10-11 storm most of the state received at least 6 inches of snow and the highest reported accumulations included 10.1 inches at Anamosa and Grinnell, 10.2 inches at Knoxville, 10.5 inches at Cedar Rapids and Waverly, 11.0 inches at Chariton, and 12.5 inches at Albia. Snow fell in Des Moines on 22 out of 31 days during the month and December 2000 went into the books as the snowiest month on record in Iowa with a statewide average snowfall of 25.5 inches. The highest total for the month was 39.6 inches at Britt which easily surpassed the all-time Iowa December record. At Des Moines December 2000 remains the third-snowiest month on record, only behind December 2009 and January 1886.
