Supervisors Discuss Funding Of Emergency Management

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Supervisors met in regular meeting Monday starting at 9:00 am in the 3rd floor conference room of the Mahaska County Courthouse.

Sheriff Paul DeGeest sits as chair of the Emergency Management Commission. The board recently met, and is looking to recommend a .10 levy versus the current form of budget revenue where each entity such as Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, or any of the other towns in the county pay $1.50 for each person residing within their jurisdiction.

Emergency Management is facing cash issues, and in the future the proposed levy would allow for better budgeting practices. Currently the budget for the office suffers extreme fluctuations because of how and when state promised funds arrive, as well the length of time grants can take to process before money is received.

Mahaska County Sanitarian Eric Dursky went over recent discussions over the Carbonado Road discussion recently held with the City of Oskaloosa. He also stated he was going to be attending some meetings later in the day with the DNR about a hog confinement near the New Sharon area.

Dave Sedivec with Mahaska County Conservation had reported at the September 19 meeting that they were in danger of losing a grant from the DNR for the lake at White Oak if the Corp of Engineers don’t quickly approve the needed permits. He reported back on Monday, that the permits had come in, and bidding was now in the process until October 20th with a public hearing and bid letting to happen October 27th.

The supervisors also passed the amended precinct ordinance 131 because of a Scribner error. The motion passed unanimously.
