The flag presented to the family in the military honors ceremony flew through the hostile skies of Iraq on an F-16 aircraft bombing mission on which Stephen B. Conner participated. The flag was presented to Steve by his son Stephen upon his return.

Steve died very unexpectedly Sunday morning at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. He was 64 years, 11 months and 8 days of age.

Stephen Eugene Conner, son of Robert Eugene and Edith Christine Headley Conner, was born December 5, 1946 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He attended grade school in Ottumwa, moving to Des Moines in 1959. He was a 1965 graduate of Des Moines Lincoln High School and went on to graduate from Northwest Missouri State University. Steve proudly served in the United States Marine Corp and was discharged in 1972. Steve spent his early employment years working as a mechanical and electrical contractor. Later he was employed for 15 years as Director of Maintenance, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. In 2003, he went to work as Plant Operations Manager at the Iowa Department of Corrections in Newton, Iowa. He retired from there in 2009. On August 13, 1994, Steve married Joyce Snyder at University Park, Iowa. Steve loved being with his family and they with him. He was always there for them or anyone that needed him, as evidenced by his work with Hometown Helping Hands Ministry, a handyman service ministry in Eddyville, Iowa. Steve and Joyce lived in Eddyville from 1999 to 2011 and had recently moved to New Sharon. Besides his family time, Steve enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time in the woods.

Steve’s family includes his wife, Joyce of New Sharon; two sons: Chris Snyder and his wife, Jenny, of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Stephen B. Conner and his fiancée, Nicole Kooiker, of Leon, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands: Bethany and Jason Fliehler of Waterloo, Iowa, and Lana and Ryan Reed of Ottumwa, Iowa; eight grand-children: Ellie, Payton and Levi Snyder; Dillon and Laney Fliehler; and Conner, Kylee and Colt Reed. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Sabra Lanphier of Knoxville, Iowa.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edith Conner and his father-in-law, Bill Lanphier.

Memorials may be made to Christ at the Crossroads Radio Ministry in Centerville, Iowa or the New Sharon Fire and Rescue Unit.
