First-Ever Perfect Team Trap Scores Leads WPU to Second at Wartburg Invite

Cedar Falls–Courtesy of the program’s first-ever perfect team score in a discipline, the Statesmen shotgun sports team finished high at the Wartburg Invitational Friday through Sunday.

William Penn placed second out of seven teams with a score of 2,733-for-3,000, while Iowa Western CC won the title at 2,762-for-3,000. Midland (Neb.) was right behind WPU for third (2,732 targets).

The navy and gold were first in two of the six disciplines, headlined by a perfect 500-for-500 in Trap. It is the first time ever that the Statesmen did not miss a shot within their five scoring shooters.

The quintet that posted perfect 100-for-100 Trap scores included Ian Darragh (So., Eagle, Idaho, Business Management), Colton Heintz-Kuderer (Sr., Mabel, Minn., Master’s of Organizational Leadership), Morgan Hodge (Sr., West Liberty, Iowa, Nursing), Trenton Hol (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Industrial Technology), and Izaac Zihlman (So., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Business Management).

WPU topped the field in Super Sporting as well with a tally of 449-for-500. Wyatt Kresser (Sr., Independence, Iowa, Public Accounting) was his crew’s best shooter at 94-for-100, while Darragh was next at 93-for-100.

Hol, at 88-for-100, and Heintz-Kuderer and Rusin Ivanoff-Ladd (Fr., Smackover, Ark., Business Management), both at 87-for-100, got on the scoreboard as well.

The Sporting Clays course was an extremely difficult one with William Penn’s 354-for-500 score good enough for second.

Trenton Giese (Jr., Muskego, Wis., Mechanical Engineering) had the best Statesmen posting at 78-for-100, while Kresser also eclipsed 70 at 72-for-100. Darragh (69-for-100), Dylan Uitermarkt (Fr., Pella, Iowa, General Accounting) (68-for-100), and Hol (67-for-100) helped their team as well.

The Statesmen were third in the standings in Skeet (487-for-500), Doubles Skeet (476-for-500), and Doubles Trap (467-for-500).

Giese guided the navy and gold in Skeet at 99-for-100, while Uitermarkt was next at 98-for-100. The duo of Kresser and Emily Sjoberg (Jr., Citrus Heights, Calif., Business Management) were 97-for-100, while Darragh and Brenden Becker (So., Genoa City, Wis., Business Management) finished at 96-for-100.

Darragh, at 97-for-100, led the way in Doubles Skeet, while Hol (96-for-100) and Uitermarkt (95-for-100) were next. Heintz-Kuderer and Kresser also got in the mix with scores of 94-for-100.

Eight individuals scored for William Penn in Doubles Trap, paced by Kresser at 96-for-100. Hodge was at 95-for-100, while Sjoberg (93-for-100) and Cole Henning (Sr., Wilton, Iowa, Industrial Technology) (92-for-100) were right behind her. The quartet of Darragh, Heintz-Kuderer, Ivanoff-Ladd, and Zihlman also factored into the navy and gold score at 91-fo-100.

Kresser posted William Penn’s best overall score, tying for first in the High Overall Athlete standings at 551-for-600. He unfortunately lost the shoot-off for the crown.

Sjoberg ended up second in the Female HOA field at 521-for-600, just two shots off the top spot.

“The weather over the weekend was all over the place, from windy on the first day, to clear and calm the next, and cloudy and low light on the final day, but we battled through it all,” Head Coach Colten Uitermarkt said. “This team has grown so much since August; the development is amazing to see. Our Trap depth was on full display, not only because of our perfect score of 500, but that we also had a lot of 99s and 98s to back up those 100s. This team is special and what they did this weekend is something I am super proud of.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to New Virginia, Iowa Saturday and Sunday as it hosts the William Penn Line Game Shoot to finish its fall season.
