Statesmen Win Co-Hosted Tournament

Burlington–The William Penn men’s golf team rolled to its first crown of the season as it co-hosted the Southeastern CC/William Penn Fall Kickoff Monday and Tuesday.

WPU finished first out of six teams with a two-round score of 636 (318-318) at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Southwestern CC was a distant second at 667 (342-325).

Oscar Florez Martinez (Jr., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) carded a tournament-low 73 on the first day and held on Tuesday to head the 33-player field at 154 (73-81). Teammates Oliver Stanway (Sr., Leicester, England, Sports Management) and Spencer Tucker (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) helped the navy and gold to a sweep of the top spots.

Stanway finished second at 155 (80-75), while Tucker was third at 156 (76-80).

Bruno Nunez (Fr., Spain, Industrial Technology) also ended up in the top 10, taking 10th at 171 (89-82). David Decker (Sr., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education) capped the varsity as he was 28th (104-92–196).

Tony Rocha (Sr., West Branch, Iowa, Business Management) paced the reserve squad in a tie for 20th at 183 (92-91). The reserve team was sixth at 770 (383-387).

Next Up: William Penn concludes its fall season next Monday and Tuesday by traveling to Olathe, Kan. to compete in the Baker Match Play. Action will be contested at Prairie Highlands Golf Course.
