Statesmen Swept by Ravens
Oskaloosa–A short rain delay could not even slow down Benedictine (Kan.) Sunday as the William Penn softball team was swept in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader.
WPU (14-21, 3-7 Heart) lost by scores of 4-0 and 11-3.
Chyanne Koko (So., Waianae, Hawaii, Business Management) pitched three scoreless innings to begin the day, but ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth and was eventually replaced by Elizabeth Whitaker (Jr., Azalea, Ore., Exercise Science). Koko finished with two strikeouts and two walks, while Whitaker had one strikeout.
Offensively, the Statesmen were shut down, being outhit 9-3 in the loss.
The second contest was delayed just a few minutes as a steady rain hit town, but once action started it was much of the same as Benedictine (20-14, 8-4 Heart) scored the game’s first eight runs. The navy and gold finally got on the board in the fifth with three runs, highlighted by an RBI double by Chelsee Herron (Sr., Anaheim, Calif., Elementary Education); the senior later scored as well.
Breann Robertson (Fr., Rainier, Wash., Human Services and Sociology) paced the offense with two of WPU’s seven baseknocks (BC had 17). Tabitha Scott (Fr., Placentia, Calif., Psychology) took the loss, while Whitaker entered out of relief and picked up two strikeouts against two walks.
Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa Tuesday to host Ashford in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
