Statesmen Start Off October Hot with 2-0 Win Over Central Methodist

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team boasted its seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Central Methodist Saturday afternoon in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

No. 11 WPU (5-0-5, 3-0-3 Heart) made the most of its shots on goal, outshooting the Eagles (3-3-3. 1-2-3) by a margin of 13-5.

Mateo Nabona (Jr., Lyon, France) started off the scoring for the Statesmen when he found the back of the net just 4:28 seconds before the end of the first half. Jedin Lee (Jr., Durban, South Africa, Sports Management) and Gonzalo Rawinad (Fr., Gijon, Spain, Psychology) picked up assists on the opening goal.

The navy and gold doubled their advantage four minutes into the second half when Jarred Hendricks (Sr., Cape Town, South Africa, Exercise Science) centered a pass that was received by Max Mayer (Jr., Wendover, England, Exercise Science). The junior then slipped it to Javier Perez (So., Alicante, Spain, Business Management), who found the back of the net to extend the Statesmen lead to 2-0.

Sil Milder (Fr., Arnhem, Netherlands, Sports Management) tallied two saves in William Penn’s sixth clean sheet of 2026.

The 13 WPU shots came from seven different players; Perez led the way with four (two on goal).

“It was a lackluster performance overall, but it’s good to finally get a win in a scrappy fashion and capitalize on the few chances we had,” Head Coach Joe Minton said. “This is a fantastic group, but we need to keep our heads in those moments. We’re 1-0, and now we’ll look to carry this mentality throughout the month of October.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa Tuesday to take on Mount Mercy in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.
