Statesmen Roll to Win in Final Non-Conference Game of Year
by Wade Steinlage
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s soccer team scored early and often as it pummeled Faith Baptist Bible 7-0 in non-conference action Tuesday.
WPU (6-8-1) both snapped a three-game losing streak and posted its largest margin of victory in over eight years.
The visiting Eagles (4-5) actually helped the navy and gold right away, putting a deflected ball into their own net just 1:39 into the afternoon.
Less than two minutes later, the Statesmen, who outshot FBB 28-1, managed their own goal, courtesy of Hannah Baker (Sr., Adelaide, Australia, Biology).
The third and final goal of the first half came in the 19th minute via Raunice Butler (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas, Physical Education); Summer Cassidy (Fr., Keaau, Hawaii, Sociology) assisted on the score.
The home squad did not slow down after intermission, beginning with Isabella Pirami (Fr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Exercise Science) producing a goal in the 47th minute. The freshman was helped on the tally by Butler and Ashley Broeker (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa, Exercise Science).
In the 67th minute, Baker again slipped one past the Eagle goalkeeper for her second goal of the day and fifth for William Penn, while Shaytel Nieto (Jr., Kansas City, Kan., Biology) made it 6-0 unassisted at the 75:54 mark.
Finally, in the 87th minute, Jeannie Soto (Sr., Woodbridge, Va., Business Management) put away a ball that was assisted on by Pirami and Nieto.
“It was fun watching our ladies tonight,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We scored some very good goals. Partnered with our second-half performance against Benedictine, we will enter our game against MidAmerica Nazarene ready to give a good account of ourselves.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Olathe, Kan. Saturday to face #23 MidAmerica Nazarene in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 1 p.m.
