Minneapolis, Minn.–The William Penn wrestling team faced off against the largest field it will see all year as it competed in the Augsburg Auggie-Adidas Invitational Saturday.
Nearly 300 wrestlers hit the mats in the Gold, Silver, or Bronze divisions.
A handful of Statesmen found some success, led by Dennis Simmons (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Sociology) going 2-2 in the 149-pound Gold bracket. The junior won once by fall and once more by major decision.
Austinn Goin (Sr., Belton, Mo., Exercise Science) matched Simmons by going 2-2 at Gold’s 174-pound weight class. Both individuals reached the consolation final.
Also in Gold competition, 157-pounder Ben Freese (Jr., Winterset, Iowa, General Accounting) won once by fall and 133-pounder Darquell Pierre (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology) claimed one victory.
Gilberto Rodriguez (Sr., Manassas, Va.) earned a pin in the Silver 141-pound weight class as well.
