Statesmen Go Down to the Wire with MoVal, Drop Two

Marshall, Mo.–The Statesmen traveled down to Marshall, Missouri to take on the Missouri Valley Vikings in a Heart doubleheader on Friday.

The Statesmen (13-36, 7-26 Heart) took the Vikings (15-37, 4-32 Heart) down to the wire in both games but fell just short losing by the scores of 3-2 and 2-0.

MVC 3, WPU 2

Jillian Calabrese (Fr., Anthem, Ariz., Elementary Education) started in the circle for the Statesmen and pitched well going five strong innings, while only allowing one earned run.

Katie Springer (Jr., Riverside, Iowa, Undecided) came into relieve Calabrese and recorded 2.1 innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits.

The Statesmen got on the board in the very first inning on a run scored by Sonia Reddy (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) on a fielder’s choice. William Penn would tack on a run in the fourth on two hits but would not be enough as the Vikings would climb back in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game then walk it off in the eighth.

Roxanna Jensen (Sr., Coto de Caza, Calif., Psychology) highlighted the offensive effort for the Statesmen going 3-4, raising her batting average to .341 on the year.

MVC 2, WPU 0

Karlee-Rose Perry (Jr., Puyallup, Wash., Biology) highlighted the Statesmen performances in the circle for game two. The Junior recorded four innings of work while allowing no earned runs and striking out two.

The Statesmen threatened in the top of the sixth but left two runners on base. William Penn did manage to outhit the Vikings 6-4.

Alexa Blazek (Fr., Henderson, Nev., Biology) led the charge offensively for William Penn recording a multi-hit game going 2-3

Next Up: William Penn will take on Evangel on Saturday in Springfield, Mo., starting at 1 P.M.
