Statesmen Fall to #11 Eagles

Fayette, Mo.–The William Penn women’s volleyball fell in three sets to the #11 Central Methodist Eagles on Friday.

The loss pushes the Statesmen to 4-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and 11-9 overall.

William Penn took the opening point off a kill from Morgan Sanders (Fr., Lee’s Summit, Mo., Biology). The Eagles took the lead shortly after, but the Statesmen stayed in the game. In addition to Sanders, three other Statesmen had two kills in the early goings as Alyvia Johnson (Fr., Owatonna, Minn., Elementary Education), Alicia Jaquez (Sr., Farmington, N.M., Biology), and Alyssa Young (Jr., Winter Springs, Fla., Biology) all made their presence felt. The hosts extended their lead to seven later on, but three consecutive aces from Macy Bailey (Jr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) cut the deficit to two. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt was snuffed out as the Eagles went on to take the opening set by a score of 25-22.

CMU took the lead early in the second set, but the navy and gold battled back to tie the set at 12-12. The Eagles controlled the rest of the set, however, taking 13 of the next 16 points on the way to a 25-15 win.

The Statesmen found themselves in a big hole early on as the Eagles jumped out to a 15-5 lead. The navy and gold tried to battle back, but the Eagles closed out the set with a 25-10 win .

Young and Sanders led the Statesmen in kills on Friday with six apiece. Johnson trailed close behind with five, and Corrin Lepper (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo., Exercise Science) contributed four.

Annalise Whitcomb (Sr., Humboldt, Kan., General Accounting) earned the start at setter and assisted in 16 of the team’s 28 kills. Bailey earned six assists as well.

Johnson led the back row effort with eight digs. Cameryn Campbell (Sr., Jefferson City, Mo., Elementary Education) complemented her efforts with seven.
