Statesmen Defeat Under-Manned Warriors in First Dual of Season

Forest City–The William Penn wrestling team collected an easy win to start its dual-meet campaign, dropping non-conference foe Waldorf 35-10 Tuesday.

WPU (1-0) won three of the six contested matches, including one by fall, but put the meet away with four forfeit victories.

The host Warriors (0-2) claimed wins at the first three weight classes to pull ahead 10-0. The navy and gold took over from there, beginning with a pin by Tyshon Cannon (Sr., LaGrange, Ga., Psychology) over Robert Ornelas at 149 pounds.

Dennis Simmons (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Sociology) and Ben Freese (Jr., Winterset, Iowa, General Accounting) were then awarded forfeits at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.

174-pounder Austinn Goin (Sr., Belton, Mo., Exercise Science) took care of Dereck Samudio by a 5-1 decision, and Dylan Comstock (So., New Sharon, Iowa, Business Management and General Accounting) slipped by Alberto Alcala 14-13 at 184 pounds.

The evening concluded with forfeits for 197-pounder Sheldon Rodriguez (Jr., Tampa, Fla., Biology) and 285-pounder Gerardo Suarez (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Industrial Technology).

Next Up: William Penn travels to Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Augsburg Invitational.
