Speaker Talks About Living With Little Impact

Colin Beavan talks with those on hand to hear his story at the Musco Technology Center Wednesday evening

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Colin Beavan creator of the No Impact Project was on hand at the Musco Technology Center to speak about the year he and his family lived, making as little impact on the environment as possible.

During the year long project that started in 2006, Beavan and his family unplugged from the electrical grid (using solar power), produced no trash, traveled exclusively by foot or bike, and bought nothing but locally grown food for an entire year, in New York City.

Beavan’s experiment was to help find ways that would be less harmful to the plant and during the process they looked for ways of improving their quality of life.

Beavan “convinced” the building security guard to allow him on the roof, where he installed a solar panel. From there, he ran the wire to his apartment where the panel was enough to charge items like cell phones and his computer. The family also used candles for light at night.

Beavan, who writes and is the administrator for his own blog NoImpactMan.Com, where he has some 2,500 daily visitors and 4,000 daily page views and about 1.8 million people have visited the blog since he established it.

The event was held in the atrium of the MTC and was free and open to the public.
