Sherman, Olivas Claim POW Awards

Oskaloosa–A pair of Statesmen were recognized for big games last weekend as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week awards were announced Monday.

Ben Sherman (Grad., Troy, Pa., Master’s of Sports Management) won the Offensive accolade for the second time in his career, while Ethan Olivas (Fr., Eddyville, Iowa) is the recipient of the Special Teams laurel for the first time ever. The duo led WPU to a thrilling 45-44 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene last Saturday.

Sherman rushed 22 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He had a long run of 41 yards, one of six times he eclipsed double figures in yards on the night.

For the year, Sherman has carried the ball 56 times for 318 yards (105.7 per game) and five touchdowns. He is averaging 5.7 yards per run.

Olivas was perfect in the contest, making all six of his extra points and, most importantly, connecting on a 38-yard field goal as time expired to lift the navy and gold to victory. The 38-yarder is a season long for the freshman.

Olivas has yet to miss in his collegiate career, going 10-for-10 in extra points and 3-for-3 in field goals to account for 19 total points.

The awards are the first for WPU this year.
