Rex Allgood, 97, of What Cheer, died Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the Montezuma Specialty Care. Rex LaVerne Allgood was born on February 20, 1925, to Verne and Lorena Owens Allgood at Oskaloosa, Iowa. Rex was the first born of thirteen children.
Rex graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1943.
Rex went into the Army following graduation through January of 1946 at the end of WWII. He served in Leyte and received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars.
On June 15, 1947, Rex was united in marriage to Marjorie Hemsley at her family’s home and enjoyed 71 years of marriage.
He worked at Hemsley Chevrolet and moved to What Cheer prior to marriage and worked at the family business. When Everett Hemsley, his father-in-law, retired, Rex, Marge, and John Hemsley took over the business until retirement in 1989.
After retirement, Rex and Marge enjoyed traveling to Australia, Europe, and many locations across the U.S. They spent their winters in Phoenix, AZ and always felt blessed to be able to spend time with both of their daughters and families. Rex was a 50 year member of the Masonic Universal Lodge of What Cheer, Order of Eastern Star and he and Marge were active in the What Cheer United Methodist Church. Rex served over 40 years on the What Cheer Volunteer Fire Department, acting as Chief for a portion of that time. One of his favorite pastimes was mowing his yard, which he continued doing into his 90’s.
He is survived by his two daughters, Diane Kitzman and Kathy Jordan; brothers: Ron Allgood, Dennis (& Marlene) Allgood, Steve (& Betty) Allgood; sisters: Phyllis (& Harley) Yates, Joyce (& Richard) Emanuel, Carmen Allgood; sister-in-law’s: Connie Hemsley, Phyllis Allgood, and Judy Allgood; four grandchildren: Robb (& Shelly) Kitzman, Denise Kitzman, Heather (& John) Spiesman, Holly Jordan; eight great grandchildren: Hazel (& Colton) Rabe, Zachary Kitzman, Cole Kitzman, Caleb Kitzman, Cayle Kitzman, Cayden Kitzman, Kira Spiesman and Emily Spiesman. He also leaves behind two great- great grandchildren, Maisie and Grady Rabe.
Rex is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; his son-in-law, Sam Kitzman; grandson, Brian Kitzman; his brothers, Bill (& Betty), Don (& Betty), Jack, and Larry; his sisters, Inez (& Curly) Bloodsworth, Judy (& Les) Cubit; father and mother-in-law, Everett and Madge Hemsley; and his brother-in-law, John Hemsley.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the What Cheer United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Sunday evening, April 24.
Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery near Delta.
