Pierre Places Sixth at Missouri Valley Invite

Marshall, Mo.–Darquell Pierre (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology) knocked off a ranked foe en route to placing as the William Penn wrestling team competed at the Missouri Valley Invitational Saturday.

Pierre placed sixth at 133 pounds, while the Statesmen were 27th out 41 teams in the standings with 23 points. #1 Grand View won the tournament with 216 points.

The 133-pounder opened his day with a technical fall and then a major decision. Unfortunately, he was knocked out of the championship bracket in the quarterfinals by the eventual champion. On the consolation side, Pierre earned two more victories, including a 4-3 upset over #19 Trey Edwards of Bethan (Kan.). The junior lost his final two matches, however, to finish sixth overall with a 4-3 record.

Tyshon Cannon (Sr., LaGrange, Ga., Psychology) recorded a 3-2 mark at 141 pounds, highlighted by a technical fall, while Johnny Hopper (Sr., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) also won multiple times (2-2 record) at 165 pounds.

184-pounder Austinn Goin (Sr., Belton, Mo., Exercise Science) picked up a fall as well.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Des Moines next Friday to face Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference dual-meet action at 7 p.m.
