Phyllis Thompson, 79, of Montezuma, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Phyllis Ann Thompson was born on March 8, 1939 at rural Montezuma, Iowa to Walter and Vernice Davis Johnston.

The family moved near Montezuma and Phyllis graduated from Montezuma High School in 1956. Phyllis attended and graduated from airline school in Minneapolis and was hired on March 18, 1957 as a teletype operator for United Airlines. She worked for United Airlines in Chicago before she transferred to Denver and then to Cedar Rapids.

On October 22, 1960, Phyllis was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Gary Thompson and four children were born, Steve, Rod, Patty and Becky.

After Steve was born, she became a stay at home mom. After Becky was in middle school, she worked at Star Lanes, the Monte Sale Barn and Brownells Inc.

Phyllis enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed dancing, sewing items for others, quilting, going to the grandkids’ activities and spending time with her family.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gary of Montezuma; her children: Steve (& Denise) Thompson of Montezuma, Rod Thompson (& Kelli Elliott) of Montezuma and Rock Creek, Patty (& Jamey) Gibson of Grinnell and Becky (& Dave) Shaffer of Grinnell; her grandchildren: Mark Thompson, Brandon Thompson, Tania Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Jayden Gibson, Colin Gibson, Alexis Shaffer and Braxton Shaffer; one great grandson, Laramie Thompson; her brother Ed (& Beth) Johnston; as well as many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father in law, Eleanor and Harold Thompson; and her sisters: Donna Ray Johnston at birth and Janet Austin.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, July 2, 2018 at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2018 beginning at noon at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the family present from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department.
