Pat Phelps, 89 of Montezuma passed away Thursday evening, May 17, 2018 at her home in Montezuma. Patricia Lou Phelps, the daughter of Forest and Lorene Greenhalgh, was born on August 10, 1928 in Sigourney, Iowa. After her parent’s divorce, she went to live with her grandmother in Toledo, Iowa.

Pat graduated from Toledo High School in 1946. After graduation, she moved to Montezuma to work for her mother at Poweshiek County Care Facility.

In January of 1951, Pat was united in marriage to Duane Phelps. To this union four children were born, Dennis, Deanna, Barbara and Lory.

Pat began working at Sutherland Printing in Montezuma in 1973. She worked for 30 years before retiring in 2003.

Pat was an avid camper and camped over 60 years at the Iowa State Fair. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, word searches, having coffeetime with her friends and riding her bicycle around town. She also loved to attend dances with her husband, Duane.

Faith and family was very important to Pat. She absolutely enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s activities if she was able. She was a lifelong member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church and a 57 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her memory will be honored by her children: Dennis (& Jan) Phelps of Grinnell, Deanna (& Mark) Knowles of Ankeny and Lory Baethke (& Don Baedaro) of Des Moines; nine grandchildren: Jarrod (& Kristin) Phelps, Travis (& Lindsey) Phelps, Brandon (& Terra) Phelps, Bart (& Kyla) Knowles, Kasey Braby, Barry (& Ashley) Knowles, Karly (& Dave) Burmeister, Chad (& Laura) Baethke and Autumn (& Dylan) Sutton; 13 grandchildren, with one on the way; and many other relatives and friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane Phelps; a daughter, Barbara Phelps; and three brothers, Ron Green, Vernon Haynes and Jerry Haynes.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, May 21, 2018 at the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montezuma United Methodist Church or the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department.
