Oskaloosa Main Street committee members held an information meeting about the Main Street organization on Tuesday evening.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – September 23rd, 2023 – On a late summer evening, local business owners, community members, and supporters gathered at the American Legion in downtown Oskaloosa to learn more about Oskaloosa Main Street.

Oskaloosa’s Main Street program, an affiliate of the State of Iowa and the national Main Street America initiative, has been instrumental in revitalizing the city’s downtown area since its inception in 1986.

The event featured speakers who shared insights into the Main Street program’s history, structure, and ongoing projects. Allison McGuire, the Community Engagement and Education Director at the George Daily Auditorium and the current Board President of Main Street, opened the proceedings by welcoming attendees. She introduced the newly appointed Main Street director, Angie Foster, highlighting the importance of community connections.

During the presentation, committee members representing the four key Main Street committees – organization, promotion, design, and economic vitality – shared the vital roles these committees play in maintaining a vibrant downtown. They emphasized that Main Street has evolved beyond event-focused initiatives, placing a renewed focus on strategic planning, community engagement, and growth.

In his comments, Eddie Pierson expressed gratitude for the community’s support and outlined the benefits of being part of the Main Street community. One of the standout advantages is access to various grants and financial assistance opportunities to rejuvenate and beautify the downtown area. Additionally, Main Street businesses enjoy organic foot traffic, as they are located at the heart of community events and activities.

The event also served as an appeal for greater community involvement. Attendees were encouraged to support Main Street through financial contributions, donations on behalf of their favorite Main Street businesses, and participation in fundraising efforts, such as raffles. Volunteering for Main Street events, joining committees, and becoming board members were among the other ways community members were invited to contribute.

One of the easiest and most effective ways for individuals to support Main Street is by sharing their positive experiences with the program and its businesses. Encouraging friends and family to explore the Main Street district, whether through shopping, dining, or attending events, helps spread the word about Oskaloosa’s unique offerings.

In conclusion, the evening celebrated Oskaloosa’s Main Street program’s rich history and a call to action for community members to continue their support. The program, born out of adversity, has grown into a thriving, nationally recognized effort that preserves architectural heritage and fosters economic vitality and community engagement.
