Oskaloosa Girls Soccer Down Redettes 10-0

Ashley Brockman (15) pushes the ball towards the goal against Centerville this past week. The Indians bested the Redettes 10-0.

The girls’ soccer team was in action last night against Centerville. After a slow start in the 1st half, the offense would come alive in the 2nd half and the Indians would prevail 10-0 to move their record to 2-2 on the season.

The first half would find the girls going into a very strong head wind and although controlling much of the first half, the ball would only find the back of the net twice. Osky got on the board first in the 14th minute when Mary Nelson took a pass from Emily Lunsford for a nice far post finish. The score would remain 1-0 until 7 minutes left in the half when Ashley Brockman slipped the ball passed the Centerville keeper. The assist would be credited to Kaia Graham.

“At half time, we talked about the need to move more to open up runs and slots through their defense. The girls would take this to heart and with more movement on the offense side, it would open up the scoring gates.”

The second half with the wind at their back would find even more opportunities for the Indians, but it was until 12 minutes into the 2nd half Kinsey Cook took a clearance and buried a 25 yard shot. Over the next 10 minutes, the Indians would go onto score 6 more times with goals by Cook (assist from Brittany DeMoney), Brockman (assist from Leah VanMaanen) , Cook (assist from Brockman), Graham (assist from Cook), Cook (Van Maanen), and Van Maanen on a penalty kick. The score would remain 9-0 until Claire Fiechtner would finish the game with 5 minutes left for the 10th and final goal with the assist going to VanMaanen.

“We are proud of how the girls came out in the 2nd half and took what we have been working on the last several practices and put it into game situations. We are looking to control the ball more and open up more runs that will hopefully lead to more scoring opportunities. A lot of credit has to go to Centerville and how hard they played with no subs and never giving up.” The girls are back in action on Monday against DSM North with a Varsity only game. The game will be played at the Cownie Complex with start time of 5:30.

One thing to mention is what the Centerville coach commented on with how great the sportsmanship was with the girls and it was hard to be upset in losing 10-0 when the girls were so nice about it (this hasn’t always been the case this year for them). So, if you see any of the girls, congratulate them not only on their win, but being amazing ambassadors of the Osky Schools and community.
