Oskaloosa, Iowa – Looking for that gift for someone special this year? Look no further than your local Optimist Club.

Oskaloosa Optimist Club is beginning an Avenue of Flags project that will provide flags on homeowners’ property on five holidays each year.

“This project has been occurring in communities in Iowa for many years and sponsored by Optimist clubs,” said club president Jeff Keep. “It is a beautiful sight to see all those flags up and down a street.”

The project is beginning with sales for Christmas and will continue into next year. Optimist Club members will place flags into holders on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day. The flags are 3 x 5 feet stitched cloth and will hang from a 10-foot standard. The standard will be placed in a holder pre-set into the ground on the property.

“This is a great opportunity for homeowners to show pride in their country and help the young people of our community,” said Keep. “The proceeds from this project will support our programs such as students of the trimester, junior golf, Friend of Youth, Respect for Law and student scholarships.”

Orders made before January 1 will be charged $35. After January 1 the price to participate will be $40. After the first year, each participant will receive an invoice for participation. Participants may drop at anytime by notifying the club. Gift certificates are available for those who wish to present them as gifts for the holidays. The project currently is available for residents of Beacon, Oskaloosa and University Park.

Oskaloosa Optimist members will be on the square with fliers during the Christmas parade on Thursday and Friday.

Checks may be made to: Oskaloosa Optimist Club, 118 1st Ave. East, PO Box 115, Oskaloosa, IA 52577. For more information on the project contact Keep at 641-673-0123.
