NM girls Fourth at Knoxville
KNOXVILLE – Only seven girls were able to make the trip to Knoxville for a wrestling tournament Monday. Lilly Briggs at 110 pounds and Kaylia Shipman at 115 earned first place finishes. Cardinal easily won the meet with 140 points with host Knoxville second with 117 points. North Mahaska edged Chariton by one point for fourth.
Briggs pinned all both of her opponents to take first. Cardinal’s Malery McFarland was the first victim in 1 minutes 27 seconds. Keelie Carter of Knoxville fell in 45 seconds of the three-person bracket.
Shipman opened the 115-pound bracket with a win by pin over teammate Ruby Wallerich in 45 seconds. Shipman pinned Knoxville’s Alyssa McCreery n 38 seconds then scored a 15-3 major decision over Cardinal’s Kendall Birk. East Union’s Peyton Cunningham was pinned by Shipman in 1:52.
Kieren Perez took second in a four-person 155 bracket. She lost by fall in the first round by Cardinal’s Reagan Vaughan in 2:18. Perez won her final two matches by pin. Chariton’s Marissa Fetters fell in 1:43 and Destiny Keith of Knoxville lost in 29 seconds.
Addison Terpstra was third in a four-person bracket at 100 pounds. She fell to East Union’s Quynn Foster in 51 seconds and lost to Lola Voth of Chariton in 5:15. In the final match she pinned Gracen McCready of Tri-County in 4:50.
The girls will compete Saturday at the Chariton tournament to close-out the first half of the season.
