Navy and Gold End Year by Placing Sixth at MCC Championships

William Penn University Athletics

Riverside–Statesmen linkster Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) produced one of the best 54-hole scores by any player in the league, but unfortunately his teammates could not follow his strong play at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.

William Penn placed sixth out of ten teams with a two-day, 54-hole tally of 920 (313-302-305) at the par-72 Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.

#3 Grand View rolled to its third-straight title with a tally of 857 (289-282-286), 22 strokes ahead of runner-up Mount Mercy. Yousaf Khan made it a sweep for the Vikings as he defeated Mount Mercy’s Derek McConnell in a playoff. The pair tied at five-under 211 with Khan going 71-71-69.

Grand View receives the automatic berth to the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship on May 22-25 in Salem, Ore.

William Penn performed so well Saturday that it nearly jumped two whole spots, finishing just three strokes behind St. Ambrose and one behind Viterbo.

Goldsmith paced his squad by tying for fourth at even-par 216 (73-70-73). The effort netted the freshman all-tournament honors (top five players named to the team). Goldsmith’s second-round score of 70 tied for the lowest of the round.

Byron Lindeque (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) made it two freshmen at the top for the Statesmen. He tied for 19th at 229 (80-75-74).

Adriaan de Villiers (Jr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS), with a 237 (78-80-79), and Geoff Dammann (Jr., Wyoming, Midland HS), with a 238 (82-77-79), were 28th and 29th (tied), respectively.

Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) concluded William Penn’s scoring in 44th place at 260 (82-87-91).
