Mona Pinne, 95, of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born August 24, 1924, in What Cheer, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Jennie Alta Cover Wymore. At two years old she was adopted by her aunt and uncle Harry and Anna Brower.
Mona graduated from What Cheer High School with the Class of 1942. While in high school she was active in the drama club. Upon graduation she earned her Teacher’s Certificate and taught country school near What Cheer for two years.
On August 12, 1944, Mona was united in marriage to Glen Arthur McKay in Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born, LeAnn, Joyce, Dennis, and Michael. Following their marriage, the couple moved to California.
Due to medical reasons Glen could not serve in the military. However, he and Mona both wanted to do their part to support the war effort, so they moved to California to work supporting the troops. After some time, there they returned to Iowa. Mona stayed busy caring for her family and home and was no stranger to helping Glen on the farm. She would drive the de-tasseling machine and help sort seed corn. She also had a large garden that she cared for all spring and summer, and then spent late summer and fall canning her home-grown vegetables.
After several years of marriage Mona and Glen divorced. Mona moved to Hampshire, Illinois to be closer to her siblings. In October of 1971 she was united in marriage to William Pinne in Hampshire, Illinois.
While in Hampshire she worked at Genoa Electric, and as a waitress at various restaurants including the “Chip and Dip”. She later took a job at Playschool Manufacturing and continued working there after they merged with Milton Bradley Games. After 20 years at Milton Bradley she left there and went to work as the secretary for the city of Hampshire. She retired from there after 10 years.
In 1995, she moved back to Iowa to be closer to her daughters. In April of 1996, her husband Bill died. Following the death of her husband, Mona put an addition on her daughter Joyce’s house and lived there until she had to move to Homestead.
Mona was a servant of the Lord her entire life, she was baptized at the What Cheer Christian Church at the age of 13. As she would move to different parts of the country it was always important to her to find a church home and be active in the congregation. She taught Sunday School and was very involved in every congregation. She loved every church she was a part of and when she moved back to Iowa, she returned to her “Home” church, the What Cheer Christian Church for the past several years. She was also very patriotic. She was very proud of her family members that served and are currently serving. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hampshire, Illinois. She enjoyed camping with her family, going for walks, especially with the dog, and gardening. She was a true servant warrior and a dedicated mother and grandmother.
