Mahaska County Ranks 6th in State for Live Healthy Iowa Participation

Healthiest State Initiative

Oskaloosa – April 20, 2012

The Mahaska Wellness Coalition invites all Live Healthy Iowa teams to join us on May 4th to celebrate our success. “Join us at noon on the square for a group photo and our monthly Step Along With Us walk. We would like to have as many people in the photo as possible. Wear your shirt if you can,” said Deb Bruxvoort, Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group.

Mahaska County had 664 adults and 1,555 youth participate in Live Healthy Iowa teams this year, an increase from 150 participants in 2011. Mahaska County ranked 6th in the state with 10.64% of our county population participating. “We are very pleased with our successes this year. The coalition was really able to create positive energy in the community with Live Healthy Iowa,” said Bruxvoort. To date, adult teams have logged 21,167 HOURS of activity and lost 1,921 pounds.

“It is exciting to see the success that can come out of coalition work. The YMCA had record usage this winter, far exceeding the past three years. Our cause is healthy living and I’m glad the Y is here to support our community,” added Dawn Collins, coalition member and YMCA Executive Director.

Dont’ forget Sat., April 21, at 1 p.m.: Mahaska Conservation continues to support the community walks by adding an outdoor option on the third Saturday monthly. April 21 join MCCB on a hike around the Russell Wildlife Area. This hike will be in the form of a “Poker Run”. While hiking trails, participants will receive a poker card at each trail loop. Prizes will be given at the end of the hike for the best poker hand collected during the hike. There is no cost for this event. Live healthy Mahaska County!
