Oskaloosa, Iowa – Planning for future disasters never ends, and with the recent acquisition of an emergency shelter trailer by Mahaska County Emergency Management, those options are now even greater.

The trailer, able to be pulled by the recently authorized vehicle upgrade, will stand ready until the need to open a shelter arises. The shelter trailer would then be unloaded by volunteers, such as CERT. It will contain cots, a generator that would be able to help power oxygen equipment, and more.

The trailer was provided by applying to the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and obtained by the use of federal dollars.

During emergencies it can become difficult to find non-profit supplies and the preloaded trailer is designed to help add resources to the community in the event of disaster. “This gives us our own tools, our own resources, right here locally. We know we can hook up and take it where it’s needed,” Mahaska County Emergency Manager Jamey Robinson stated.
