Mahaska County Courthouse Dresses Up For The Season

Maintenance Director Troy Bemis was caught placing the star on top of the tree, with maintenance assistant Don Hubbard

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The 25th annual Lighted Christmas Parade will be making its way once again down the streets of Oskaloosa, and the Mahaska County Courthouse will be ready to look the part.

Wednesday morning county employees were seen putting up the Christmas Tree on the main landing at the courthouse.

Maintenance Director Troy Bemis was caught placing the star on top of the tree, with maintenance assistant Don Hubbard. Bemis said that he and the staff don’t spend much time putting up the tree and other decorations, but that people in the offices bring ornaments from home to add that special touch.

In the basement of the Courthouse is an entire lighted village. Brian Knudtson said he started collecting the village around 10 years ago when he was a bachelor.

Brian Knudtson sits at his desk with his lighted village on tables in front of him.

“People started giving me stuff over the years”, and he also inherited some portions of it from his grandparents. With the addition of children, Knudtson stated, “well maybe I’ll just set it up in my office here”. With extra room in his office, he has shared the 50 some odd piece display for the past 5 years with visitors to his office.
