Lyle Panno, 98, of Oskaloosa passed away late Friday evening, March 24, 2017, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House. Lyle Glenn Panno, son of Harry L. and Helen G. (Shaw) Panno was born October 6, 1918, in Clearwater, Minnesota.

Lyle attended school in Clearwater and Fort Ripley, MN, before the family moved to Emily, Minnesota where he finished his education.

Before joining the Army, March 19, 1942, he worked for the Minnesota State Forestry Service, a gas station near Crosby, MN, and a saw mill. While in the army Lyle served in the Northern Solomons and the Luzon Campaigns in the Anti-aircraft Artillery Search Battalion and was awarded the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star.

Following his discharge, Jan. 27, 1946, Lyle moved to Fargo N.D. where he attended Hanson Auto School and later taught there. After leaving the school, Lyle continued working in the auto industry and later worked for a plumbing company in Madelia, MN. After moving to Fairfax, MN, he met Myrna Peck, and September 12, 1959, they were married at the Methodist Church in Fairfax. Lyle worked construction for a few years and later served ten years with the Minnesota Highway Department. Lyle and Myrna moved to Oskaloosa in 1973 and he went to work at Rollscreen in Pella. Lyle retired Dec. 23, 1983.

Lyle was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was a long-time usher and helped take Sunday attendance. He also was a member of V.F.W. Post #2237 and Farm Bureau. Lyle loved people and was a friend to all he met. Lyle also enjoyed playing solitaire.

His family includes his wife of 56 years, Myrna of Oskaloosa; his daughter, Amy (& James) Thayer, also of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Alicia Thayer and Ryan Thayer; and a great-granddaughter, Willow.

In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by a son, Allan Panno; and two brothers: Alvin and Larry Panno.

Lyle’s body has been cremated.
Memorial services and burial of his ashes will be in Fort Ridgley, MN at a later date.
Military honors will be presented by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
