Lincoln, Neb.–The Statesmen men’s bowling team was red-hot to end Thursday, but Friday saw the other side of the coin as William Penn’s season ended at the xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships.

The 11th-seeded Statesmen, who had defeated #6 and #3 by identical 4-2 scores Thursday, was just three championship bracket wins away from the national title (four if through the loser’s bracket).

Unfortunately, William Penn ran into the buzzsaw of #2 Robert Morris (Ill.), and the eventual title game participant dropped the navy and gold 4-1.

Demoted to the consolation bracket, the Statesmen met #10 Webber International (Fla.) in an elimination matchup. Again, William Penn came up short in another 4-1 loss, and as quickly as the season seemed destined for national glory, it was over as the program tied for 5th With Notre Dame (Ohio).

It will be an all-Illinois championship pairing as Robert Morris faces off against #8 McKendree Saturday.

The 2013-2014 campaign looks extremely bright for William Penn as all of the team’s participants this week are juniors and younger. The team included Michael Applegate (Fr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Undecided), Drew Balta (Jr., Walford, Iowa, Education), Brandon Barboza (So., Brick, N.J., Sociology), Kyle Clark (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Physical Education), Cameron Foster (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management), Jacque Kaune (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management), Conan Mackey (So., Bray, Ireland, Public Accounting), Nathan Namanny (Jr., Denison, Iowa, Applied Mathematics), and Piet Schaeffer (Jr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics).
