Lois Maxine Poole, age 96, of Albia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at the Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa. She was born on January 15, 1922 to Harry Joseph and Viola Mae (Coffin) Gares in Clark County, MO.
Lois graduated from the Revere Missouri High School with the Class of 1940. Following graduation she attended Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe Missouri.
Lois was united in marriage to Alfred Lester Poole on February 6, 1943 in Kahoka, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Patty and Stephen. Lois and Lester shared 73 years of marriage together until Lester’s passing in 2016.
Lois worked as a private secretary for the Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison and then as a bookkeeper for Hayes Elevator in Mount Pleasant before moving to Albia. Lois was always busy and worked at the Monroe County Auditor’s Office and Monroe County Hospital as a bookkeeper. For 25 years she worked as a bookkeeper at Kness Manufacturing. Not ready to retire, Lois then obtained a real estate broker’s license and operated Poole Real Estate for a number of years.
Lois was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving as an officer in United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Albia Women’s Club and PEO. She enjoyed volunteering her time with Cub Scouts as a Den Mother, as a 4-H leader and a leader of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. Lois was very caring and outgoing. She always enjoyed people but above all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Lois is survived by her two children: Patty (& John) Judge of Albia and Stephen Poole (& Denise St Clair) of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Douglas (& Heather) Judge, Dien (& Steva) Judge, Joseph (& Betsy) Judge, Sean Poole and Spencer Poole; five great grandchildren: Catrina, Anne, Aidan, Millie and Moira; a niece, Donna Hamberg; and a nephew, Ronald McIntosh.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Viola; her husband, Lester Poole; a sister, Thelma McIntosh; and a brother-in-law, Therman McIntosh.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2018, at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Lois’s family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia with Pastor Roger Henry officiating.
Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.
Memorials have been established to Trinity United Methodist Church and Welcome Home Soldier.
