Lewis, Whitehead Win Conference Accolades
Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen softball team was head and shoulders above its competition last week and two of its hottest players were recognized for their work in that as the Midwest Collegiate Conference weekly softball honors were announced yesterday.
Outfielder Khyia Lewis (Sr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) was named Player of the Week, while Jennifer Whitehead (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) garnered the Pitcher of the Week laurel. The award is Lewis’ third in her career (two in 2012), while Whitehead has won three in a row and five overall in her navy and gold tenure.
The pair led William Penn (21-11, 9-1 MCC) to a perfect 6-0 week, including three wins by the mercy rule.
Lewis hit .500 (8-of-16) during the week, including three home runs and three doubles. She tallied 11 RBIs and eight runs scored.
She had multiple hits in three contests and posted four or more RBIs twice, including tying a season high with five RBIs against Clarke on Saturday.
For the year, Lewis is hitting .330 (30-91) with team-bests in doubles (9), home runs (tied with 8), RBIs (33), runs (28), total bases (63), and walks (12).
Whitehead was 3-0 last week and did not allow a single earned run (three unearned). She struck out 18 and walked one in 17 innings of action.
The sophomore quieted Clarke and Waldorf over the weekend, not permitting anyone to score at the MCC Weekend.
For the year, Whitehead is 9-6 with a 1.31 Earned Run Average in 96 innings. She has 15 complete games, three shutouts, 67 strikeouts, and 23 walks. Opponents are hitting .231 against her.
The awards are the fifth and sixth for the program this year.
