Marshall, Mo.–Max Lewis (So., Duchesne, Utah, Biology) has only been in the wrestling room for two weeks, but is improving exponentially, highlighted by a high finish at the Missouri Valley Invitational Saturday.

The Statesmen placed fourth at 285 pounds to guide William Penn to a tie for 19th place with 36 points. Host and #2 Missouri Valley won the team title with 157 points, while #1 Grand View was second with 146 points.

Lewis owned a 6-2 record, including upsetting #7 Cooper Thomas of Grand View 2-1 and #10 Aaron Rafalko of Midland 1-0. The bracket–actually the entire tournament–was loaded, featuring seven members from the NAIA’s top 10.

133-pounder Darquell Pierre (So., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology), with two falls, and 125-pounder Jeremy Andujar (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Biology), with one fall, both posted 2-2 marks.

Jason Beebe (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management), at 174 pounds, and Jay Fresh (Grad., Knoxville, Iowa, MBL), at 184 pounds, both pinned one opponent each, while 125-pounder John Altieri (Jr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) defeated one foe by technical fall.

141-pounder Tyshon Cannon (Jr., LaGrange, Ga., Psychology) and 165-pounder Johnny Hopper (Sr., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) also won once each.

Next Up: William Penn returns home next Friday to host #14 Baker in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet at 7 p.m.
