Leona Popejoy, 93, of Montezuma passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at her Montezuma residence. Leona Evelyn Popejoy, the daughter of Fred and Orena Vermillion Davis was born in Poweshiek County near Brooklyn on January 17, 1924.

Leona attended the Malcom country school and one year at Montezuma.

In 1940, Leona married John Hicks. They were the parents of five children, Jim, Jerry, Johnny Lynn, Carol and Kim.

Leona was a homemaker, waitress and shirt factory worker. She lived in Flippin, Arkansas for 25 years. In 1992, Leona moved back to Montezuma to be closer to her family.

Leona enjoyed her retirement and loved cooking and baking for her family. Leona wrote country songs, had a green thumb for her flowers, and collected owls, butterflies and dolphins. She also had a fondness for taking care of cats.

Her memory will be cherished by her children: Jim (& Meryll) Hicks of Montezuma, Jerry (& Dottie) Hicks of Montezuma, Carol (& Kenny) Maschmann of Montezuma, and Kim Hicks of Montezuma; her grandchildren: Mike (& Roxie) Hicks, Shelli Johnson, Jamie (& Chris) Brennen, Tammy (& Frank) Pierce, Tom Hicks, Scott Maschmann, Sharri (& Dallas) Carothers, and Partner Maschmann (& Sonya Grandstaff); 18 great grandchildren; and 12 great great grandchildren; her nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Leona is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Johnny Lynn; her brothers, Buddy Davis and Smith Davis; and her sisters, Vernice Johnston and Louise Cox.

Memorial services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, November 25, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Burial will be held at a later date in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma.
Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
