Columbia, Mo.–Chris Leiba (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Business Management) and Kayla Music (Fr., Corpus Christi, Texas) saved their best for last as the William Penn indoor track and field teams battled in the Missouri Collegiate Challenge Saturday.

The duo took advantage of one final shot to qualify for the NAIA National Championships as both lowered their times substantially to punch a ticket.

Leiba was second in the 60 with a school-record and automatic-qualifying time of 6.85 seconds. He also claimed the 200-meter dash crown in 22.45 seconds.

Music capped an incredible first indoor regular season in the navy and gold by breaking her own program mark in the 60, hitting the provisional standard in 7.83 seconds to place fifth. The freshman was third in the 200 as well in 26.12 seconds.

Joel Brown (Fr., Columbus, Ga.) collected a pair of top-10 efforts in the sprints as well, taking sixth in the 60 (7.09) and eighth in the 200 (23.01).

High jumpers Tristen Elmore (Jr., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education) and Mofiyinfoluwa Alade (So., Hoffman Estates, Ill.) both placed near the top of their standings. Elmore was third at 6-6.75 and Alade was fourth at 6-4.75.

Shelbie Williams (So., Hedrick, Iowa, Elementary Education), in seventh in the shot put (39-10.5) and Elayna VanArsdale (Jr., Bensalem, Pa., Secondary Education), in ninth in the weight throw (45-10), competed in the throws.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay squad also ended up third in a time of 3:28.99.

“This was a huge bounce-back from last week at the conference meet,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said. “Nearly everyone who competed had a personal best, broke a school record, or qualified for nationals. Our coaches did a great job preparing our athletes for this meet.”

Next Up: A total of five individuals will represent WPU at NAIA Nationals on February 28-March 2 in Brookings, S.D. Music (60-meter dash), Leiba (60-meter dash), Alade (high jump), Elmore (high jump), and Sage Ehresman (Jr., Sully, Iowa, Exercise Science) (shot put) have all earned trips to compete for national glory.
