William Penn Finishes Heart Opener with 1-1 Tie Against Benedictine

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team rallied to end up with a 1-1 tie against Benedictine in its Heart of America Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

No. 4 WPU (2-0-3, 0-0-1 Heart) outshot the Ravens 12-5 (4-3 in shots on goal), but trailed 1-0 at halftime after a goal by BC (3-1-1, 0-0-1 Heart) in the 45th minute.

Gonzalo Rawinad (Fr., Gijon, Spain, Psychology) managed to finally get the navy and gold on the board, scoring off a pass from Jedin Lee (Jr., Durban, South Africa, Sports Management) at the 58:50 mark.

Rawinad topped the offense with four shots, while Javier Perez (So., Alicante, Spain, Business Management) tallied two.

Despite several chances, both squads were stymied down the stretch as the Statesmen were again left with a draw.

Sil Milder (Fr., Arnhem, Netherlands, Sports Management) stopped a pair of shots versus a program that is currently receiving votes nationally.

“This was an overall okay performance against a well-organized team in Benedictine,” Head Coach Joe Minton said. “We do still have the same empty feeling, though, as we feel we should have won the game with the chances we generated in the attacking third.”

“It is not enough to continue drawing with teams,” Minton added. “We have only won two games so far, and so our concern is finding a way to get those wins.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Davenport Tuesday to face St. Ambrose in Heart play at 5 p.m.
