William Penn Fifth at Grinnell Invite
Grinnell–The Statesmen men’s cross country team continued its season Saturday by going north to compete in the Grinnell Les Duke Invitational.
WPU placed fifth out of eight teams with 148 points, while Central took the crown with 16 points.
Central’s Jack Brown was first out of 143 runners on the 8K course in a time of 26:00.4.
Andrew Miller (Sr., Le Claire, Iowa, Exercise Science) guided the Statesmen with a top-10 effort, taking seventh at 26:41.4.
Carson Springer (Sr., Grimes, Iowa, Business Management) was next for the navy and gold, finishing 36th at 28:22.3, while the duo of Cameron Shutwell (Jr., Fort Madison, Iowa, Exercise Science) (53rd, 29:02.1) and Gavin Huff (Jr., Mascoutah, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) (55th, 29:05.8) were separated by only a few seconds.
Myles Goldman (Fr., Marshalltown, Iowa, General Accounting) wrapped up the squad scoring in 67th at 29:22.3.
Lukas White (Fr., Rockford, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) topped the remaining William Penn competitors in 68th at 29:25.2.
“The guys ran another gritty race today with our depth on display,” Head Coach Caleb Silver said. “We had three newcomers in our top seven, including Cameron Shutwell, Myles Goldman, and Lukas White. Cameron stepped up and had the strongest race of his collegiate career, while Myles was due for a breakout race. Lukas also stepped up for us and got some great experience in an 8K race.”
“We missed Brayden Veiseth in our lineup, and Sullivan Wilkins ran with an injury, but we fully expect them to be right back in the mix in a few weeks,” Silver added.
Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Pella on Friday, September 25 at 5:30 p.m.
