Leads slip away from Dutch in volleyball tournament
WINONA, Minn. — Two matches slipped away from the Central College volleyball team Saturday at the Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic.
Central (0-4 overall) dropped the its first match Saturday 19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11 to Wis.-Stout (1-3 overall) and then dropped the nightcap to tournament host St. Mary’s (Minn.) (3-1 overall) 23-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10.
“We earned the opportunity to battle for the fifth set in three of our four matches, but we still need to learn how to finish,” said coach Jeanne Czipri.
Senior outside hitter Kylie Gerstein (Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) posted her first double-double of the season in the first match with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Senior middle hitter Jenna Dille (Carlisle) finished with 13 kills and six blocks in the final match of tournament.
“Jenna had a good weekend and there’s plenty to build on going forward,” said Czipri.
Junior setter Chapel Carter (Colorado Springs, Colo., Coronado HS) compiled 27 and 34 assists in the matches Saturday.
Even after a winless weekend, Czipri sees positives from the Dutch.
“There’s quite a bit to take home and work on this week but we are eager to have the opportunity to put it into practice and matches,” she said.
Central heads to Waldorf College Tuesday night with first serve at 7 p.m. Tuesday will be the first time the two teams have ever met.
