The Mahaska County YMCA Director post will change hands this month as David Phelps steps down, effective April 15. Phelps has accepted a new position closer to his wife and three daughters in Wisconsin.

“Dave’s contributions as Director over the past 18 months have been a great benefit to the Y organization and, undeniably, he will be deeply missed,” said Y Board Chair Madonna Bowie.

“This is an exciting time for the YMCA, with the potential of a new recreation and early childhood education center on the horizon if the one-cent option tax is renewed,” she said.

“The Board has already made arrangements for an interim director to step in following Dave’s leave to allow the YMCA to build on the momentum we have already created,” said Bowie.

Interim Director Announced

Mark Cartledge, who will assume the interim role on April 11th, joins the organization with over 35 years of experience with the YMCA according to Bowie.

Smaller Iowa communities have to work extra hard to keep a Y viable and accessible for local citizens. Cartledge specializes in making sure centers are financially successful and serve the recreation and education needs of the community at all income levels.

“The Board will work with Mark to continue to build on the positive changes that we have made to improve our current Y. We will also plan for the opportunity to be involved in helping to create and operate a new facility that will better serve the Mahaska community in the future,” Bowie said.

The Mahaska County Y staff and volunteers are dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
