Late PK Sinks Statesmen
Cedar Rapids–The William Penn women’s soccer team was once again bitten by a last-minute goal as it fell 2-1 to Mount Mercy in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Tuesday.
WPU (5-5-1, 2-4-1 Heart), which was outshot just 18-12, was on the verge of recording a solid tie on the road against the Mustangs (4-5-1, 3-4-1 Heart). Unfortunately, MMU was awarded a penalty kick in the waning moments and secured the come-from-behind win.
The visitors broke through right away as Anna Museler (Sr., Dresden, Germany, Engineering) deposited a ball from Amerie Osorio (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Undecided) at the 3:54 mark.
That 1-0 advantage stood until the 21st minute when Mount Mercy evened the score at 1-1. The tie remained for the next hour-plus of play, until the hosts earned and put away a PK with just 2:57 left on the clock.
Following the score, the navy and gold were shut down the rest of the way as they came up empty on the road trip.
The quartet of Osorio, Sian Bah (Sr., London, England, Political Science), Heidi Gill (Buncrana, Ireland, Undecided), and Rakiya Morgan-King (Jr., Gloucestershire, England, Kinesiology) all tallied two shots in Tuesday’s loss.
The defense was guided by a six-save outing from goalkeeper Emma Billings (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychology).
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host William Woods in Heart action at 2 p.m.
