Lady Statesmen 32nd in First National Poll

William Penn Women's Athletics

Oskaloosa–The Penn women’s basketball team has performed well in the early stages of the 2010-2011 season and its success has not gone unnoticed by the national raters as the first NAIA Division II women’s basketball poll was released yesterday.

The Lady Statesmen (5-4) are unofficially 32nd with 25 votes.  Penn entered the campaign 38th with one vote.  It is the highest ranking for the program since joining the NAIA in 2001-2002.

Defending national champion Northwestern heads Division II with 436 points and 15 first-place votes. Davenport (Mich.) is second with the other first-place vote, while Morningside, St. Francis (Ind.), and Cornerstone (Mich.) round out the top five.

St. Ambrose leads the Midwest Collegiate Conference in 11th, while Iowa Wesleyan is four spots back in 15th.  Grand View is also receiving recognition, tying for 38th with five votes.  Including Penn, seven programs from the state of Iowa are represented.

The Lady Statesmen open MCC play Wednesday by hosting Waldorf at 5:30 p.m.
