Kriegel’s career night not enough for Dutch women’s basketball team

Central College

PELLA — Junior forward Jackie Kriegel’s (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) career-high 18 points were not enough for the Central College women’s basketball team to overcome Buena Vista Wednesday night, falling 81-68.

Central (9-15 overall, 2-13 Iowa Conference) trailed 39-29 at halftime.

“Buena Vista started the game quickly,” said coach Chelsea Petersen. “It took our women a little while to adjust to the speed that Buena Vista wanted to play at. Buena Vista was able to play at a fast pace and shot 72 times.”

Kriegel led the Dutch in scoring and corralled nine rebounds, freshman forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) added 14 points and five rebounds off the bench and sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry) had her seventh statistical double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“Kendall Brown and Jackie Kriegel were fantastic inside tonight,” said Petersen. “They did a great job posting up and scoring.”

Marburger has 14 career double-doubles, placing her in a tie for seventh with Lori Ellwood (1987-89) for career double-doubles at Central.

Buena Vista (13-11 overall, 9-6 conference) outrebounded Central 44-38, however, the Dutch won the field goal percentage battle 41.1 percent to 40.3.

“I was extremely proud of the way our women battled tonight,” said Petersen. “

Central finishes the season at Luther Saturday at Decorah for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the women beginning at 2 p.m. Luther won the first matchup with the Dutch 75-72 January 4 at Kuyper Gym.
