Ruthi Rogers and Michael Giruma prepare to demonstrate some native Kenyan food dishes at the Book Vault in downtown Oskaloosa

Just before Noontime Saturday,William Penn Graduate Michael Gituma shared some of his native food dishes from Kenya with Ruthi Rogers and others in attendance at the Book Vault in downtown Oskaloosa.

Gituma originally hails from Kenya, but is now a resident of Oskaloosa since 2005. His home in Kenya is located in the eastern part of Kenya in the Meru Central District. This is where Gituma was born and lived for over 20 years before he moved to Nairobi where he lived for 10 more years. He then moved to the United States to attend college at William Penn University.

Gituma met his wife Jessica in a sociology class while attending William Penn, and he is now a happy family man with 4 children.

The menu included Ugali, Rice (using coconut milk) and Chapattis (flat bread) that is served with fish, beef stew, beans and vegetables, tomatoes, and some salt (Gituma is using collard greens).

Gituma also made some chai tea and many other snacks.

The Book Vault is host to ‘Cooking at the Vault‘ with Ruthi Rogers and she just recently completed her second season that airs on MCG channel 7.
