Jack was born on June 21, 1924, in Waterloo, Iowa to John and Louise Gindt Penne. He was raised in Waterloo and attended school there. He received a BA degree in Education from Loras College and later received a MA degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Jack was married to Rita Catherine Meisch in Waterloo. The couple lived in Toledo before moving to Grinnell. He taught Social Studies and Ancient History at the Grinnell High School. He also served as Vice Principal of the Grinnell High School prior to his retirement.

Jack enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and traveling throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East. He was a member of the Iowa State Education Association, the National Education Association and the Elks Lodge. He was also a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was the church organist for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Rita C. Penne of Grinnell; one daughter, Mary Beth Penne of Ottumwa; and one son, Bob Penne of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to Dollars for Scholars or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell.
