James Edward Peden, Jr. 77, of Fremont died Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born Tuesday, November 5, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of James Edward and Anna Margaret Orman Peden, Sr.
James graduated from Ottumwa High School with the class of 1958. Following high school, he worked various jobs in Ottumwa including, North American Van Lines, Comfort Upholstery, Clark Service Station, and was also a taxi driver.
On April 25, 1959, he was united in marriage to Jean Anne Leedom. To this union four children were born, Michael, Joseph, Jeffrey, and Jill (Pooh).
In January of 1967 Jim began working at John Deere Ottumwa Works, where after 30 years he retired on January 31, 1997. In 1989, in addition to working at John Deere, he started Rainbow Seamless Gutter in Hedrick; later he changed the name to A-1 Seamless Gutter Inc. In 2004, he retired from the gutter business.
Jim loved to be outdoors. Fishing, hunting, metal detecting, and mushroom hunting were among his favorites. Spending endless hours in his woodworking shop and creating beautiful projects for others was a passion of his. He also enjoyed gardening and tending to his flowers. Jim never missed feeding the birds, rabbits and squirrels in his driveway each morning. He was a member of the UAW Local 74.
His family includes his four children: Michael (& Susan) Peden of Cedar Rapids, Joseph (& Teresa) Peden of Ottumwa, Jeffrey Peden of Des Moines, and Jill (& Rick) Thompson of Oskaloosa; ten grandchildren: Slater, Abygail, Jacob, and Sadi Thompson, Tesla Jo, and Christopher Peden, Hunter, and Ryan Peden, Dana Cox, and Cory Popejoy; six great grandchildren: Malcom McRoberts, Kaelyn Cox, Emery Cox, Elijah Popejoy, David Popejoy, and Elaina Popejoy; two sisters: Kristie (& Colleen) Ham of Ottumwa and Kathy Katko of Davenport; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; his brother, Tom Peden; and his sister, Mary Tormey.
A celebration of life gathering will be held Sunday, August 5, 2018, from 12:30-3 p.m. at the community park in Fremont, Iowa. Please bring lawn chairs if you wish to attend.
As was Jim’s wish his body has been cremated. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
