Iowa Speedway Designer, Co-Owner is Nominee for 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame Class
Resume includes: 55 NASCAR Sprint Cup wins, 1989 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship
NEWTON, IA – April 11, 2012 –Rusty Wallace, designer and co-owner of the 7/8 mile Iowa Speedway tri-oval, could be adding another achievement to his resume in the near future. On SPEED TV’s hour long show, Race Hub, Wednesday night, the 25 nominees for the 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame class were announced to the public. Wallace was amongst the names called out.
“I’m extremely honored to be named as a nominee for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. There are just so many people that have made huge contributions to the sport, that to be recognized like this is just really humbling,” said Wallace. “This really means a lot to me and my family.
Stan Clement, president of Iowa Speedway, shared his thoughts and offered up his congratulations to one of the sport’s legends.
“Rusty has been a great friend and partner of Iowa Speedway and to the fans of the Speedway for several years now. To have him be nominated for the highest honor in NASCAR, really says a lot about him as a person and his racing career,” said Clement. “We have always felt Rusty belonged in the Hall of Fame and now that is a definite possibility.”
“This sport has done so much for me and I hope that I’ve been able to give a little back over the years,” Wallace went on to say.
Wallace, who won 55 Sprint Cup races over his 25 year career, the 1989 Sprint Cup Series Championship, and the 1991 IROC Champion, became involved with Iowa Speedway in the initial planning stages. With weekly visits during the construction phase, Wallace drove every layer of Iowa Speedway to give it his stamp of approval. Since the first race in the Fall of 2006, Iowa Speedway has held numerous NASCAR Nationwide Series races, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races, Izod IndyCar Series races, and ARCA Series races.
