Indians 7th Grade Basketball Over Newton

Oskaloosa Indians

The 7th grade girls basketball got their first taste of school basketball with back to back games at Newton and at Indianola on Monday and Tuesday. The team has 17 girls out for basketball and many of them have played very little basketball. The team continues to work hard on their skills and are just beginning to learn the game.

The Oskaloosa A team came out a little slow in the first game of the year against Newton but were able to take a 10-9 lead at halftime. In the 2nd half the girls started moving better on offense and picked up the defensive intensity. In the 3rd quarter, the Cardinals only scored 2 points. The Indians ended up running away with a 31-15 win.
The Oskaloosa B team went back and forth with Newton the whole game. The halftime score was 10-10 but the Indians ended up falling 16-14. The team got a great stop at the end of the game and worked the ball to get a lay-up just before the buzzer, but the shot wouldn’t fall.
The Oskaloosa C team had many girls playing and learning for the first time. They played hard but fell 16-4.

A team scoring: Lucy Roach 12, Maleah Walker 12, Presley Blommers 4, Maddy Moorman 2, Audree Cheney 1
B team scoring: Maddy Moorman 6, Kaia Cook 6, Kynedi Humphrey 2
C team scoring: Skylar Long-Myers 2

On Tuesday, the Indians traveled to Indianola. Against tough competition, the Indians had a harder time pressuring the basketball on defense. The Oskaloosa A team found themselves down early with some good looks that wouldn’t fall and other open cutters that we couldn’t get the ball to. Indianola took a 17-0 lead at halftime. The girls were challenged at the half to try to win the 2nd half and they nearly were able to. At the end of the game, the girls fell 32-12. The girls played a much better 2nd half with more consistency, effort, and positivity. They did a much better job of moving the basketball and hitting the open cutters. The C team was able to put the basketball in the hoop a lot better, but still ended the game losing 17-9.

A team scoring: Presley Blommers 4, Lucy Roach 4, Maleah Walker 2, Maddy Moorman 2
B team scoring: Audree Cheney 6, Maddy Mooman 2, Kaia Cook 2
C team scoring: Raelynne Callen 7, Skylar Long-Myers 2
