Helping Taxpayers Save Money

Share Iowa located along South 7th in Oskaloosa

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The taxpayers of Mahaska County are enjoying a break on the cost of feeding inmates, all thanks to the local group of Share Iowa.

Picking back up on a past tradition of helping to provide food to the jail, a simple case of apples helped to reignite that tradition all over again. So Becky Newman from Share Iowa and the staff from the jail sat down and decided upon some in-stock food items.

Potatoes, lettuce, carrots, along with deli sliced turkey and many other items were decided upon and the donation was made to the benefit of Mahaska County.

Newman said that every month, Share donates to different organizations in the community such as the Ecumenical Cupboard and senior meals. “I happened to be in a couple of different county offices recently and I heard that there’s a lot of programs being discontinued because the county doesn’t have enough money.”

“So I thought–how can Share best help,” Newman said. “So the first thing was to help the county to offset some costs so maybe that money can be used in other ways.”

“Share is for everyone,” Newman says about the program. Share has been around for 20 years, and Newman says the mission is “the same now as day one.”

There is one stipulation when using Share and it’s resource. “That is, since your getting a great savings on food items, that you go out and do something good for someone else for two hours a month.”

Share Iowa is located at 1102 South 7th St. in Oskaloosa, with their location being open from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
