Helen Boertje Demonstrates Rug Braiding at Tassel Ridge

Helen Boertje taught herself how to braid rugs at the age of 15. She has continued this unique craft for 63 years now.

Boertje started braiding rugs because she liked the look of wool rugs on wood floors. Old wool suits, skirts, coats “anything wool, old wool blankets,” is where Boertje finds her materials for the rugs she makes.

The current rug, that is in the picture, is being made from a blanket she found in a thrift shop. She said that she liked the colors of the blanket, then found other materials that coordinated with it.

Her first place that she showcased her skills was at the Nelson Pioneer Farm outside of Oskaloosa. She has since been to the Iowa State Fair, Living History Farms and many other historical events around.

Boertje holds classes in the fall to teach those interested in the art of rug braiding. Helen lives in Pella and is a member of the Red Rock Art Alliance.
